Terms of Service
These are the terms on which Ordinary Company, LLC provides Refractive. By creating an account you agree to them. They are written to be read, so please do — particularly the two sections about advice and about the model provider you connect.
1. Who can use it
You must be at least 18 years old and able to enter a binding agreement. You are responsible for what happens under your account, including keeping your password to yourself. Tell us if you think someone else has access to it.
2. What Refractive is — and what it is not
Refractive is software that uses AI models to help you organize and follow through on your own goals. It is not a person, not a professional, and not a substitute for one.
Specifically, and this is the part that matters most:
- Not medical or clinical care. The Physical Body and Emotions & Meaning domains support reflection and habit-building. They do not diagnose, treat, or prevent anything, they create no clinician relationship, and nothing in them should delay you seeking real care. If you are in crisis, contact your local emergency number or a crisis line.
- Not financial, investment, tax, or legal advice. The Finances domain helps you see your own spending and set your own targets. It does not recommend investments, does not price securities, and does not prepare or advise on taxes. Decisions about your money remain yours.
- Not always right. AI models produce confident, fluent output that is sometimes simply wrong, including about facts you told it and about inferences it drew about you. Check anything that matters before acting on it.
3. Your content
What you put into Refractive stays yours. You give us only the permission needed to run the service for you: to store your content, process it, and send the relevant parts to an AI model provider so the agent can respond. We do not claim ownership of it and we do not use it to train models — see the privacy policy for exactly where it goes. You are responsible for having the right to share what you enter, which is worth a thought before uploading documents or contact details belonging to other people.
4. What it costs, and the model account you connect
Refractive includes a set of open-weight models — DeepSeek V4 Pro, GLM-5.2, or Kimi K2.6 — that we pay for. Using them costs you nothing today and has no message limit. Refractive is in early access and that is why: we intend to charge for it, and when we do, we will say so here and in the changelog before it takes effect, never by converting a working account into a locked one without notice. Nothing on this page is a promise that the product stays free.
You may instead connect your own API key from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, or OpenRouter and choose the specific model that answers you. When you do, that provider bills you directly for usage, at their rates, under their terms and their privacy policy. We do not control those rates, we do not resell that capacity, and we cannot refund it. Refractive keeps routine background work on a cheap model regardless of what you have chosen, but the spend on your provider account is between you and them. Remove the key in Settings at any time and Refractive stops using it — and returns you to the included models rather than to nothing.
5. Fair use
Please do not:
- Use Refractive for anything unlawful, or to harm or harass anyone.
- Use the included models as free API capacity for something other than your own use of Refractive — scripted traffic, resale, or running another product's workload through this one. The included models are paid for out of a shared budget; one account treating it as an endpoint takes the agent away from everyone else.
- Attempt to access another account's data, probe or interfere with the service's security, or scrape it at scale.
- Resell or white-label Refractive without a written agreement with us.
We may suspend or close an account that does these things. Where it is reasonable to do so, we will tell you why first.
6. Shared households
Inviting someone to a Finances household gives them access to that household's income, budgets, transactions, and uploaded statements — including ones you added. Only invite people you intend to share all of that with. If you leave or delete your account while another member remains, the household and its records stay with them.
7. Ending it
You can delete your account at any time from Account. Deletion is immediate and permanent: there is no grace period and no backup we can restore from, so export your data first if you want a copy. We may stop offering Refractive, or discontinue parts of it; if we shut the service down we will give reasonable notice so you can export.
8. Availability and changes
Refractive is provided as-is. It is early software, it depends on third-party providers we do not control, and it will sometimes be unavailable or behave unexpectedly. We do not promise uptime, uninterrupted access, or that the agent will always be accurate or available. Features change; the changelog records what changed and when.
9. Liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, Ordinary Company, LLCis not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages, for lost data, or for decisions you make based on the agent's output. Our total liability for any claim relating to Refractive is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim, or one hundred US dollars. Some jurisdictions do not allow these limits, in which case they apply to you only as far as the law permits, and nothing here limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited.
10. Changes to these terms
If we change these terms materially, we will update the effective date above and note it in the changelog. Continuing to use Refractive after a change means you accept the updated terms; if you do not, you can delete your account.
11. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas, United States, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, and any dispute will be brought in the state or federal courts located there. This does not take away consumer protections you have under the mandatory law of your own country of residence.
